From ProEnglish Theatre in Kyiv, Ukraine, The Book of Sirens will make its premiere as a livestreamed performance via Facebook April 9 at 11:00 AM ET (18:00 local).
Anabell Ramirez will perform the piece under the direction of Alex Borovenskiy. Providing music for the production will be Valerie Leif on piano. The production tells the stories of Molching, a German town bombarded by bombing during WWII, and Liesel, a little girl who learned how to read in a bomb shelter with inspiration pulled from Markus Zusak's The Book Thief and works by Hector Abad Faciolince.
The production will include Soviet radio announcements of WWII, live piano, Soviet war songs, a rendition of "Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven, and the sound of sirens. It will be performed in English from the theatre, which turned into a bomb shelter at the beginning of Russia's current invasion into Ukraine. The theatre has turned into a safe haven for artists, locals, and animals, and has continued to create theatre during the crisis.
