Todd Almond and Ben Toth

Selections from a new, currently untitled musical by lyricist Todd Almond and composer Ben Toth—about love across the divide during a time of political turmoil—are presented November 7 as part of the Deutsche Musical Akademie’s Schreib:maschine at Berlin's Neuköllner Oper.

In addition to songs from Almond and Toth's new work, the evening also features songs from Philipp Riedel and Birgit Simmler's 1884, Larissa Bultmann's The Pact with God, Lidia Kalendareva's Suite in the City, and Broadway's Waitress, featuring a translation by Marco Krämer-Eis.

Performers include Tim Al-Windawe, Torsten Ankert, Livio Cecini, Devi-Ananda Dahm, Joyce Diedrich, Robert Eller, Viola Fabretti, Monika Gut, Michael Heller, Albert Hubert, Tatjana Hubert, Lidia Kalendareva, Sascha Luder, Iris Meier, Philipp Nowicki, Jana Stelley, Toth, Anastasia Troska, and Isabel Waltsgott.

Almond, recently on Broadway in Girl From the North Country, toured the country with Courtney Love in his original musical Kansas City Choir Boy. He also starred in three of his original musicals at Central Park's Delacorte Theater: The Tempest, The Winter's Tale, and The Odyssey.

Toth’s Untuned Ears Hear Nothing but Discord, a song cycle with text by Meghan Brown, premiered at Lincoln Center as part of In Need of Music: The Songs of Ben Toth in 2018. He served as composer for a production of As You Like It, directed by Michael Sexton, and for Twelfth Night at the Theatre at St. Clements. Toth also scored Josh Radnor’s indie hit Liberal Arts.

Founded in 2010 by Kevin Schröder, Friederike Harmstorf, and Robin Kulisch, the Schreib:maschine is Germany's leading professional open stage for musical writers and composers.

Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
