The cast of Saturday Night Live took on Broadway’s Rent in a May 12 sketch featuring 2018 Tony nominee Amy Schumer.
Series regular Cecily Strong plays a local Denver journalist reporting on a children’s theatre production of Lil’ Rent, in which the director swapped mentions of HIV-AIDS for diabetes (seemingly inspired by this viral tweet from October)
Rent opened on Broadway in 1996, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as Tonys for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score for the late Jonathan Larson, and Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Wilson Jermaine Heredia, who played Angel.
Fox will present a live adaptation of the musical January 27, 2019; casting and creative team will be announced shortly.
Saturday Night Live has a storied history of parodying musical theatre, including this recent sketch riffing on the melodies of Les Misérables.
