Rosario Dawson, who starred as Mimi in the film adaptation of Rent, was arrested April 15 in Washington, D.C., while taking part in a protest with Democracy Spring, fighting against the scourge of money in politics.

The Young Turks, an online news show covering politics, pop culture and lifestyle, filmed her reaction after being released.

“This has been going on for a week now. This is one of the largest demonstrations—if not the largest demonstration—on the Capitol,” she told the news outlet. “We’re taking and putting ourselves on the line for what a lot of people across American—and I think across the planet—really want to be able to see happen in America, which is ‘one person-one vote’ and to really take the money out of politics, so that we can have fair elections with real progressives and people can be going up and running for office and be seen, and we can have true options for our leadership, which we have not been able to see because we’ve seen a lot of money in politics which has distorted our politics and our legislation, and thank you very much for covering this. And, I hope that you continue to do so because I think this is a tremendous issue, and I’m really grateful that I could be here and be a part of it.”

Dawson was part of a non-violent protest on Capitol Hill, where she and others crossed a police line and sat down in protest. They were arrested, but released just a few hours later.

TMZ reports those arrested in her group were charged with crowding, obstruction and other similar offenses.
