Elf the Musical is now available for licensing in the U.S. and Canada for 2019 and 2020, theatrical licensor Music Theatre International (MTI) announced today. The show will become unavailable following the 2020 holiday season due to contractual obligations.

Based on the 2003 film starring Will Ferrell, the musical features a score by The Prom's Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin and a book by the late Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Prom). The show follows Buddy, a young orphan who learns he is human after being raised by elves. Buddy journeys to New York City to find his birth father, who turns out to be in dire need of some Christmas spirit.

The show enjoyed holiday runs on Broadway in 2010 and 2012 and has enjoyed several national tours and regional productions. Elf the Musical JR., an hour-long version adapted for young performers, has been licensed more than 2,000 times since it was released in 2015.

“Over the past few years, our customers in high schools and community theatres have eagerly waited to present Elf the Musical to their audiences,” says MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen. “The demand for this show has been intense, due in part to the unprecedented success of the several regional productions that have taken place, which is why it is so gratifying to make this musical, which has already become a holiday classic, available for licensing. This fish-out-of-water comedy has an important message about staying true to yourself in the face of adversity and Bob, Matt, Chad and the late Tom Meehan have done a superb job translating Buddy’s journey from screen to stage.”
