After premiering in London's West End in 2016, the play, featuring a script by Jack Thorne and based on an original story by Thorne, director John Tiffany, and series creator J.K. Rowling, opened on Broadway in April 22 at the newly renovated Lyric Theatre with much of the original principal cast.

The play is also heading to Melbourne, Australia, beginning performances at the Princess Theatre January 16.

“The beautiful and historic Curran in San Francisco is the perfect theatre for the next North American company of Cursed Child. We are delighted that Ambassador Theatre Group and Carole Shorenstein Hays have worked their magic to provide the ideal West Coast home for the production,” said producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender in a joint statement. ATG, which owns the Lyric Theatre, will operate the Curran during the engagement.

Additional information on the California bow, including casting, exact dates, and ticketing, will be announced later.

The eighth installment in Rowling’s series picks up at the start of the seventh novel’s epilogue, in which Harry Potter’s youngest son Albus sets off for his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While struggling to follow in the footsteps of his father's legacy, Albus sets off on a complicated mission to live up to the Potter name.

After winning nine Olivier Awards in London, the play picked up six Tonys June 10: Best Play, Best Direction of a Play for Tiffany, and a sweep in all four technical categories for a play: Scenic Design for Christine Jones, Costume Design for Katrina Lindsay, Lighting Design for Neil Austin, and Sound Design for Gareth Fry.
