Gretchen Cryer-Helmed New Musical Cycles Off-Broadway, Starting Tonight | Playbill

News Gretchen Cryer-Helmed New Musical Cycles Off-Broadway, Starting Tonight Theater for the New City presents Bike Shop, The Musical, helmed by Gretchen Cryer, who starred in and wrote the book and lyrics for the long-running I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It On The Road with composer Nancy Ford. Performances begin Sept. 11.

Bike Shop, The Musical features a libretto by Elizabeth Barkan, who also stars, lyrics by Caroline Murphy and music by Youn-Young Park. Gerry Deiffenbach is musical director. Performances are scheduled to run through Sept. 27 at TNC's Cino Theater.

Told through narrative and song, the musical follows three generations of a bike-obsessed Jewish-American family. Barkan stars as Bobby, who stops cycling due to a horrible accident while working as a messenger. As she runs her bike shop and fixes real bicycles onstage, she attempts to get her life "back into gear."

In a case of life imitating art, Barkan is the prior owner of a bicycle store in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, a former bike messenger and a former U.S. Cycling Federation bicycle racer. Her acting credits include Kryptonite Hearts at Theater for the New City.

As recently announced, Cryer will star alongside Rex Smith in I'm Still Getting My Act Together and taking it on the road… at The Laguna Playhouse Oct. 7-Nov. 1. Directed by Cryer, the show features music by Ford and a book and lyrics by Cryer.

Tickets for Bike Shop are $15 and can be purchased by visiting TNC.
