The Drama Book Shop—the famed theatrical book store in New York City currently owned by Thomas Kail, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jeffrey Seller, and James L. Nederlander—will celebrate its 105th birthday—and first anniversary since reopening its doors in its new location at 266 West 39th Street—with a special event June 10. Complimentary cookies from Schmackary's will be offered to the first 105 customers, and patrons with any book purchase of $25 or more will receive a free drink from the cafe throughout the day.
Since 1917, The Drama Book Shop has been a mainstay of New York’s theatre scene. Earlier this year, the store launched an e-commerce site, providing worldwide access to thousands of theatrical titles. Every month select titles are highlighted supporting a a different theme. June’s Pride selections include Tanya Barfield's Bright Half Life (paperback), Lisa Loomer's Homefree (paperback), Tarell Alvin McCraney's Choir Boy (paperback), Randy Rainbow's Playing With Myself (hardcover), Justin Sayre's From Gay to Z: A Queer Compendium (hardcover), Robert O'Hara's Bootycandy (paperback), and Terrence McNally's Some Men and Deuce: Two Plays (paperback).
Founded in 1917 by the Drama League, The Drama Book Shop became an independent bookstore in 1923, and in 2011 the store received a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre.
Longtime friends and patrons of the bookstore Kail and Miranda, along with Seller and Nederlander, purchased the store from Rozanne Seelen, whose late husband Arthur Seelen had bought the store in 1958. The new location, designed by Hamilton scenic designer David Korins and his team, pays homage to 20th century European cafes and reading rooms, and features a cafe serving coffee, teas, and light snacks.
