September 15: Performances begin on Broadway for the Roundabout Theatre Company revival of The Cherry Orchard. The Anton Chekhov classic has been adapted by Tony winner Stephen Karam and stars Diane Lane, Chuck Cooper, Joel Grey and Celia Keenan-Bolger, among others.
September 20: Following a sold-out, world-premiere run at Manhattan Theatre Club last year, Simon Stephens’ acclaimed two-hander Heisenberg returns for a Broadway engagement starring Denis Arndt and Mary-Louise Parker reprising their roles.
September 20: John Goodman, John Slattery and Nathan Lane lead the all-star cast of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s classic newsroom play The Front Page. The Broadway revival is helmed by Jack O'Brien.
September 20: Direct from acclaimed runs in London and Edinburgh, Simon McBurney debuts The Encounter on Broadway. The show uses aural technology and unique storytelling devices to detail National Geographic photographer Loren McIntyre’s experience of being lost in the Amazon rainforest.
September 22: Performances begin for the Roundabout Theatre Company production of Love, Love, Love, penned by King Charles III playwright Mike Bartlett. Michael Mayer directs a cast made up of Zoe Kazan, Amy Ryan, Richard Armitage, Ben Rosenfield and Alex Hurt.
September 23: Comedians Nick Kroll and John Mulaney make their Broadway debuts as the unstoppable, geriatric New York City bachelors Gil Faizon and George St. Geegland in Oh, Hello on Broadway. Directed by Alex Timbers, the show is part scripted, part spontaneous comedy.
OPENING
September 15: St. Ann’s Warehouse kicks off its new season with the world premiere of Taylor Mac’s A 24-Decade History of Popular Music. Mac’s epic work, told through 240 songs, charts American history from 1776 to present day.
September 22: The Public Theater’s free touring production of Hamlet officially opens its sit-down engagement at the downtown theatre. The show has been touring community venues, including correctional facilities and homeless shelters, in all five boroughs of New York City.
SPECIAL EVENTS
September 15: United Solo Festival, the world’s largest solo theatre festival, kicks off at Theatre Row for another year of unique theatrical pieces. Performances run through November 20.
September 16-17: Following a sold-out run in Chicago, famed comedian Carol Burnett brings her show Evening of Laughter and Reflection to the Beacon Theatre in New York for two performances only.
September 18: Don't miss the 68th Emmy Awards, recognizing excellence in the television industry, featuring a slew of Broadway talent among the contenders. Nominees include multiple Tony winners Audra McDonald and Viola Davis, All The Way Tony winner Bryan Cranston, Tony winner Lily Tomlin, stage and screen star Benedict Cumberbatch and Dry Powder actress Claire Danes.
September 18: The Film Society of Lincoln Center and Disney present a 25th anniversary screening of Beauty and the Beast at Alice Tully Hall. The screening is being introduced by some of the original voice cast members including Angela Lansbury.
September 20: See Tony winners Janet McTeer and Liev Schreiber discuss their return to Broadway in Les Liaisons Dangereuses with New York Times theatre reporter Michael Paulson. The TimesTalks event takes place at Merkin Concert Hall and is also being live-streamed at TimesTalks.com.
September 21: Another of Playbill’s unmissable cruises, Broadway on the High Seas, departs from Rome for a 10-day exploration of the best spots on the Mediterranean.
September 22: Miss Saigon’s 25th anniversary celebration in London, which was filmed in September 2014 before a live audience, is screened for one night only in select movie theatres throughout the country.
September 25: The Broadway Flea Market returns to the theatre district for the 30th year. The annual event sees industry and fans unite in the buying and selling of memorabilia and gifts to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Set to appear at this year’s autograph table and photo booth are Alex Brightman, Kelli O’Hara, Corey Cott, Alice Ripley, Adrienne Warren and many more.
